- The Irish Punk Rock Radio Show on Belfield FM -

🎃 Fáilte Roimh go dtí PUNC!🎃

This is the website for PUNC, a radio show (and occasional zine) about punk music from Ireland (and from members of the Irish diaspora). You're here because you've gone trick-or-treating with the Yesterweb Hallowe'en websurfer!

You've found a treat! Here's a Hallowe'en playlist from the (bloody, dripping) heart. In it you'll find spooky punk music from Ireland as well as further afield, along with other Irish music that celebrates the darkness. So Oíche Shamhna shona daoibh & enjoy this playlist, whether you're having a Hallowe'en party, sitting on your couch watching for trick-or-treaters or doing nothing at all 'cos Hallowe'en isn't a big deal in your country...

Yours sincerely, the Mysterious DJ MAL

PS: There is swearing in this playlist. You've been warned.

Ireland and Hallowe'en

As this is an Irish punk radio show, Hallowe'en has a special significance for PUNC. Hallowe'en was originally an Irish festival - Oí che Shamhna is the word for it in Irish. It's generally believed that Irish immigrants brought Hallowe'en to America, and then the festival spread throughout the world. Although many cultures have autumn or winter festivals, some of the most distinctive Hallowe'en practices are Irish in origin - like carving pumpkins. This is an adaptation of an earlier Irish practice of carving faces into turnips at Hallowe'en. Other Irish Hallowe'en traditions include playing games (like bobbing for apples), singing songs and telling stories, dressing up in costumes, and eating barm brack (a kind of fruitcake).

Sidenote: If you want an alternative to the pumpkin, a turnip is a good call. They're more difficult to carve, but they last longer, look creepier and compared to the Hallowe'en pumpkins (which are grown for size not flavour) are usually tastier. Appallingly, there is no turnip emoji.
